ABOUT THE CENTER

The University of Lodz Center of Social Innovations is an inter-Faculty, interdisciplinary unit of the University of Lodz, operating pursuant to the Regulation No. 22 of the Rector of the University of Lodz of 29 October 2012 on the principles of establishing, functioning and financing of the University of Lodz Science and Research Centres and the adopted statute.

Its creation has been initiated by representatives of four Faculties of the University of Lodz: Faculty of Philosophy and History, Faculty of Educational Sciences together with the Faculty of Management and Faculty of Economics and Sociology, which is reflected in the composition of the Scientific Council appointed at the Centre.

The unit focuses, first of all, on broadly understood social innovation, understood as innovative, non-standard solutions to social challenges and problems. The Center also undertakes the implementation of the idea of the University's social responsibility as well as promotion of the University of Lodz in the local environment.

Activity of the Center is based on an interdisciplinary approach to the undertaken issues and solutions to social problems, with simultaneous cooperation with representatives of various sectors. It is important for the initiatives undertaken by the Center to combine science with the social, cultural and business environment, including non-governmental organisations and municipal units.

The aim of the Center is, therefore, to establish cooperation between researchers from various disciplines of the humanities and social sciences and representatives of the external environment in the implementation of interdisciplinary activities aimed at developing and implementing innovative solutions for social development and solving significant social problems. At the same time, these activities are also aimed at promotion and popularisation of social innovations in the public debate.

The implemented tasks cover four areas of activities:

  • research (e.g., implementation of research, search for innovative solutions, their implementation in social reality and evaluation; creation and implementation of research projects in cooperation with partners from the state, private and non-governmental sectors; pilot studies in the field of social innovations);

  • education (among others, teaching combined with innovative social solutions; extension of alternative forms of employment; extension of the didactic offer of the University of Lodz in the field of combining theory with practice, implementation of action research; organisation or co-organisation of meetings, conferences, seminars, study days, open lectures, workshops, discussion panels);

  • economy (e.g., cooperation between science and business as part of co-implemented projects; work on commercialisation of knowledge and research results; support in the implementation of social innovations);

  • society (e.g., development, implementation and evaluation of social projects; support for the integration of the world of science with the local community; support for people who are actively involved in the subject of civic participation).
